Recommended road trips through Southern England
Our tours help you explore Southern England according to your available travel time and personal interests. Each itinerary is based on our own travels and combines some of the most beautiful regions and sights into a carefully planned journey.
Tour 1 – South of England in a glance
This is our most comprehensive tour of Southern England, running from East Sussex to Cornwall and covering almost the entire region. It is ideal if you are visiting Southern England for the first time and want to experience as much as possible.
Tour 2 – The West of Southern England
Here we explore Devon, Dorset, Somerset and Hampshire, with beautiful coastal towns, historic houses and gardens, and plenty of time to discover the two great moorland landscapes of Dartmoor and Exmoor.
Tour 3 – The East of Southern England
The south-east includes Kent, the “Garden of England”, as well as East and West Sussex. It is a region of magnificent gardens and historic houses, many of them reflecting the wealth and influence of London. It is also home to elegant seaside resorts such as Brighton and Eastbourne, as well as historic towns such as medieval Rye.
Tour 4 – The Isle of Wight and the New Forest
This tour is better suited to more experienced travellers – we don’t recommend it as a first tour of Southern England. For a whole week, it is to explore the Isle of Wight, a popular holiday island just off the south coast, before continuing to the wonderful landscapes of the New Forest.
Tour 5 – Cornwall
For many visitors, Cornwall is the epitome of Southern England. It is a very special part of the country with a magnificent landscape and delightful coastal towns.
Cornwall’s architecture is distinctive, as is its history. Even the once-declining Cornish language has been revived. So it is a visit between yesterday and today with a lot of tradition and history, some tourist hot spots and many very quiet corners. It is an ideal destination for independent travellers who enjoy exploring beyond the obvious sights.
Tour 6 – The Cotswolds
Another tour for independent travellers: The Cotswolds are often referred to as the “heart of England” – a rolling landscape of beautiful stone villages and historic market towns stretching across six counties.
We have personally visited all the places, sights and gardens featured in our itineraries and have written about them in detail on this website. We hope that, after exploring Southern England for yourself, you will be just as captivated by this beautiful part of England as we are!
