A sign showing the nearest toilet – in some places this is the most important signpost! (Here in Chipping Camden.)
Public toilets have an underrated importance in South England. This is no joke, it’s a dream: No place is without central public toilets, in the same way as no place is without parking spaces, etc. They are practically always free of charge and very clean. They are more than a cultivated establishment and are so British.
Whether it’s referred to as “Public Conveniences”, WC (water closet), Toilet or simply “Loo” – it is an ever-present facility that can only be envied in comparison to many other countries!
