Canterbury in Kent is an ancient university and Archbishop’s city in the east of southern England.

Originally, Canterbury was called „Cantwarabyrig“ in Old English, which means „The Castle/Place of the people of Kent“. It is precisely this place that the city with its approximately 55,000 inhabitants has remained to this day. The busy pedestrian zone with its shopping streets clearly shows this during the day. Many street cafes invite you in and these are often used by the countless tourists.
Despite the massive destruction caused by German bombs in the Second World War, parts of the old city fortifications are still standing and many beautiful old buildings have been preserved to this day – for example the historic Weaver’s House. The city is surrounded and crossed by the River Stour, which is very shallow, but can be navigated on guided tours in small punts (flat boats).

Note: A walk through many small alleyways of the town leads through the historic centre, where there are often art installations. Then all of a sudden, you’re standing in a very typically English residential street right in the city centre, which is completely unspoilt by the masses of tourists.

However, without question the highlight of the city is the cathedral. The mighty Canterbury Cathedral can be seen from many places in the city. It is only in the old town that you can easily miss it. This is especially because the entrance is almost hidden and inconspicuous.
