Beachy Head in East Sussex

In East Sussex, the rolling hills of the South Downs extend to the English Channel, where they end in mighty chalk cliffs. They are very similar to the famous white cliffs of Dover, which is not far away to the east.

Right next to the town of Eastbourne with its wonderful pier is Beachy Head, a rather high headland and at 162 metres above sea level even the highest in England. Beachy Head is followed to the west by Birling Gap and the Seven Sisters, seven chalk cliffs.

From Beachy Head you have a great view to Eastbourne, but also of the English Channel and far inland. The top of the chalk cliffs is covered in grass, making it an ideal grazing area for the countless sheep there.

For walkers it is a paradise – almost endless footpaths on soft meadows with breathtaking views of the sea and the South Downs (a chain of hills which is now a national park) invite you to discover this fascinating landscape.
