Eastbourne Pier

It is very typical for English seaside resorts to have piers. Only a few of these from the second part of the 19th century still exist. Piers built in the 19th century are still preserved but some were destroyed by fire. Eastbourne in East Sussex has an almost 300-metre-long pier built between 1866 and 1872. The majority of these superstructures date from 1899-1901. They are mainly used as entertainment venues, amusement arcades, and various other things such as a theatre, but also as a bar, restaurant, tea room, Camera Obscura etc. At the front of the pier is the “Blue Saloon”, a games room with slot machines which are always popular in England. It is precisely this area that fell victim to a fire in 2014. The photos shown here date back to 2009 and document its original condition.
