Malmesbury Abbey (Wiltshire)
Malmesbury is a small town of fewer than 5,000 inhabitants in Wiltshire. Situated on the River Avon, its standout feature is its abbey, which dates back to the 12th century in its current form. Although significant parts of it were destroyed by fire and the decrees of Henry VIII, it remains an active church to this day.
Also worth seeing is the market cross found in many towns; its worn stones beautifully reveal its centuries-long use as a central marketplace.
Also worth a visit are the ‚Abbey House Gardens‚, located not far from the abbey.
