Stourhead Garden – View from the Grotto
Stourhead is one of the earliest and most influential gardens in England. Designed as a landscape garden from 1742 onwards, it uses many ideas from Italian and French landscape painting of this time. Basically, it can be seen as a painting turned into a landscape.
A bridge, a grotto, a cottage and a temple, a Gothic High Cross and even a replica of The Pantheon are grouped in a picturesque way around a landscaped lake.

The Temple of Apollo is slightly elevated
In addition, there is the horticultural design of Stourhead, which compliments the extensive deciduous tree population (lots of colour in autumn!) with rich collections of rhododendrons and azaleas. The garden radiates in all conceivable colours, especially in the spring.
The basic idea is that you should never see the same thing twice when walking through the garden. A path which is usually taken anti-clockwise leads around the lake and opens up new breathtaking views at every corner.
The manor house is slightly above the garden and is also open to the public.
The house and garden have been owned by the National Trust since 1946.
